Hello everyone thanks in advance for thoroughly explaining your recommendations.

So here is my dilemma…

I would like to have a laptop as my primary (and only) computer so that I am able to continue working when traveling or at home. So would like it to be powerful yet light (5lbs max, preferably 3.5sih).

I will be working with a program that requires about the same processing power as Photoshop C6 and so believe I need about 8GB of ram or more and a processor equivalent or more powerful that the i5. These numbers are based on a quick online search; do they look accurate to you guys?

I would also like to set up two external monitors (HP w2207) with great resolution. I know this requires a decent graphics card but even after an online search I am foreign to exactly what I need. Though I have never worked with one before, the expense of a docking station would justify allowing an easy dual monitor set up.

Lastly the more bang for my buck the better. However, I would prefer to spend extra to purchase a laptop that easily accommodates my criteria than to have to deal with any sort of headaches due to lack of power, a difficult or low resolution dual monitor set up and or back pain (to heavy). My budget is 600-1200 and would consider a used or refurbished from eBay or similar to acquire a “better deal”.

I believe a weighted average of my laptop satisfaction would be (please forgive any incorrect annotation, I hated math):

Satisfaction = f(weight) x .15 + f(performance) x .5 + f(quality dual monitor resolution) x .35

To summarize, I would like a laptop that:
• Weighs 3.5-5lbs (lighter the better)
• Can breeze through a program similar to Photoshop (not very sure what type of power that requires)
• Can easily accommodate two external monitors with great resolution (would consider a docking station)
• Fits a $600-$1200 budget and would prefer used or refurbished if I get more for my dollar

Thanks in advance guys!

There are a few interesting things you can do, but I'm not sure it will all fit inside of your budget.

You would probably be wanting to get an i74700QM processor or similar. Now if you wan to get a decent GPU within that same laptop, you are probably going to hit or go well past your budget. Something like a GTX770m or 8970m would be at the top end. GTX735m and 8750m towards the mid-end.

Another option is a laptop without an internal video card, but a Thunderbold port. This would reduce the base price of the laptop and let you easily hook up your external monitors when you are home. While pricey, external thunderbolt enclosures will let you purchase a desktop video card (that is fully upgradeable)

Then you can look at full capacity GTX770 or GTX780 cards, or Radeon 7950 or 7970 cards (8000 models aren't out for desktops yet)
