You cant if you're talking about strait up RDP. I would suggest a business laptop with integrated tracing, tpm, and hard drive encryption for next time.

When I worked at dell if you filed a police report, gave us the report number we would flag a machine as stolen. At that point if some one called in about the machine we would get information as best we would from the person who called in and then forward it to you and then you and the police would make a recovery. I only think I saw that work like three times over four or so years tho.

If you don't mean windows rdp and instead youre using log me in or something then you could do reverse traceroutes or go through the persons information they put on the machine if they don't wipe it, tho if you have a password on it im guessing they are wiping it.

As for future machines. 1500ish would get you a latitude with a tracing program built into the machine that is almost impossible to get rid of by most people since it works at multiple hardware and software levels. Ontop of that you can also has a secure hard drive incase they try to pull it and read it. Even we couldn't bypass the passwords on those and you cant undo the tracing either even if they managed to unlock the bios which they would need a copy of the internet bios password application or guess your account name with dell to get that accomplished.
