mouse pad not working

Make sure the mouse itself is not dirty. Even optical and laser mice need to be cleaned from time to time, especially if you have any furry companions. A Q-tip moistened with alcohol does well to clean the sensor.

He sent me a PM. It is indeed a trackpad. I asked if he checked to see if it was switched off; a Function Key or Fn+Function Key might do this.
Some trackpads auto-disable if a mouse is also plugged in, but I don't think that's the case here.
 


Ah, glad we got that cleared up! Some designs have a small sensor on the trackpad (in a corner of it, perhaps) that will lock the trackpad as well when tapped. Might be worth having him check that also.
