It is not possible for $179 to get anything decent. If that is your budget I would suggest buying used equipment which will stretch your dollars. Stay away from stuff like the Sony which has no upgrade path. Find a working stereo receiver and a pair of speakers at a price you can afford. You can always add more functionality such as bluetooth etc with outboard adapters if needed.

++ on used right now I'm listening to some used vintage and newer equipment that I found over the course of my travels

I have an amusing ??? amount of stereo gear on my desk.. check it out:

so then right now I'm listening on my pc (to Fiio E07K /E9 and then to a Pioneer SP+700D (digital surround proc..but being used as pre) $15 > Elan Z660 power amp (briged to 120WPC)$7 > JBL L1 bookshelf speakers ($40)

and the other system I could switch on is same fiio e07k /e9 > Pioneer SA-710 integrated amp (65WPC) > B&W V202 speakers $20

I also have this gear hooked up to my $15 Sony C75ES cd changer I got a week or so ago..

oh and I also found these Klipsh KG 2.5 speakers for ~$60
they are pretty sweet:

obviously these are just examples but there (if you have the patience / luck / room to deal with the size of this gear any reason to be listening to the sony thing... any of these speakers / amps and my ES will murder that thing..imho.

Sorry for the late response, I've been busy with school.

I asked the friend the same thing I asked you guys and he also said it was crap. He recommended "Onkyo HT-S3500 5.1"
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3500-5-1-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B0077V88V8

Would you guys agree with him?
Also, would it be possible to hook that up to a desktop?

Is.. Is that heaven? I would love to have a setup like that.

He can go on a web site called Audio asylum and they have a bunch of used audio gear for real cheap.

hi... so the onkyo htib is going to be nicer than the sony ..but .... it is still going to not be (honestly) all that super. Is that onkyo top of your budget range ??? or as previously mentioned maybe state how much you can spend doing this. it does take patience and luck.. and searching but used (especially if you are kinda open to good stuff that turns up (rather than being said on a certain model / make) is going to really stretch your monies.

if you needed to buy new and say that onkyo is the top of you budget (guessing?? here? do please confiirm)

what I would do personally is get something like this (my first ht set up i did do this got receivers and mains ..then added sub / center and surrounds over time as more monies was available)

but i would get the receivers and some 2.0 speakers then add other stuff as more money is available

this is a pretty good deal.

http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/YAMRXV375BL/YAMAHA-RX-V375-5.1-Channel-AV-Receiver/1.html

(my wife and I got a 5~ months ago a Yamaha RX-V573 (last years model) for $299 on sale at fry's it has been excellent and imho yamaha stuff just generally sounds great... I'm gun shy on onkyo as many of their models seem to have people grumpy about HDMI failures or what not...

Polk makes really nice value speakers so say if you got that yammy and maybe the polk monitor 35B bookshelf speakers for now... the polks also tend to be pretty readily available so finding a matching Center ...etc down the road wouldn't be a problem.

anyways if you got the 35B's you could say get the 65T's later and use them as the mains then move the 35b's to the surrounds

just a thought ... but basically yeah the onkyo htib is > than the sony but it is still sort of meh IMHO.

and oh yeah.... thanx for the compliment on my set up...
lol not enough desk space but...... it is pretty nice... I really enjoy listening to music and it does sound pretty dang good ...
