I recently bought the Logitech z906 speakers, they are absolutely incredible, but i want to know if i will notice a big difference in a few different scenarios.

My computer has no soundcard, and i am using the onboard 7.1 channel audio, which is 3 3.5mm jack plugs. I want to know how big a difference i will get in sound quality and crispness if i get the sound blaster z (http://www.dabs.com/products/creative-sound-blaster-z-pci-express-oem-8PTC.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=product%20search&utm_content=Q200) and then connect that up to my speakers via optical.

I also want to know if there is any point in getting some new speaker cable for each speaker. As it stands at the moment, i have god knows how many meters of the bog standard stuff that comes with the speakers, and i want to get the minimum amount i need to connect the speakers to the sub. So let's say i got some OFC cable, would there be a noticeable difference between that, and your ordinary twin core copper stuff (it's about 2mm thick)

Since the speakers do the DSP( surround sound) 5.1 encoding, the sound card won't do much. You could buy the card and see how it sounds. I would encourage you to buy it and see if it is worth it. Will you be using this for gaming, music, movies or all three? EAX is great but too bad most games now don't use it.

Speaker cable wise, it shouldn't make much of a difference but 18 gauge(called lamp cord in the USA) is more sturdy. The wires don't break apart as easily. It is really cheap to buy so no big loss if it doesn't improve the sound..

Argh, it would make it easier if they would make sound cards with HDMI 1.4 and PC speakers systems that support it.

Happy listening, the Prisoner...

Yeah, forgot to mention what i use them for, silly me!

I love music, like a lot. EDM, hip hop... anything with a catchy beat.
I do game quite a lot also, and do watch a lot of films on DVD, and stream also.

I have read that it is best to use a soundcard and use optical on it, but i'm not entirely sure what to do!

There are TONS of threads/slash forums about whether to use a sound card or not. Like I said, your speaker system is doing the sound decoding so the sound card won't have much to do. If you want the music out of all the speakers(stereo 2.0 simulated to 5.1), the optical won't do that. Maybe buy a sound card at a local shop, play with it a few days and if it doesn't meet your fancy, return it.
