i'm about to purchase the ASUS Xonar DS 7.1 for my PC and i thought i should grab myself a new pair of headphones to maximize the sound card. my tritton ax180 is broken (no sound right side). i play lots of games so a mic is kinda optional, but preferred. i was thinking of bose, but it's expensive! my budget's around $150-$200.
steel series siberia v2 any good?
what about the logitech G430?
the logitech UE 6000 looks really cool. any thoughts?

I really don't think you will find a headset that is good for music. Your best option for a set up for gaming and music both, (if you are interested in quality) is Headphones with a separate microphone.

It seems that lately the manufacturers that produce audio components for PC's have somehow arrived at the conclusion that if you are interested in games or good quality 5.1 analog (5.1 analog is far superior to any digital audio connection on a sound card, a digital audio connection is only superior in stereo) sound you are not interested in high quality audio for music and vice versa.

I personally hate this attitude, just because I would like my music to sound great first and foremost doesn't mean I wouldn't like to have the best possible sound for movies and games.

As far as headphones go Bose makes some good quality cans but, my feeling is that Bose products are overpriced. I have the Bose MIE2 earbuds they have great sound (for earbuds), they are very comfortable and they don't fall out like others do. I got these as a Christmas present and while I do like them, I'm sure you could get the same quality sound reproduction in some other brand like Altec-Lansing, Audio-Technica, Sennheiser, etc. for a much cheaper price than the $100-$140 the Bose costs.

For headphones I use Audio Technica ATH-A700 which are very comfortable and sound good but, could do a little bettor in audio reproduction for the price.

The Audio Technica ATH-PRO500MK2 sound quite nice for the price and can be bought for $110 at amazon. There are better more expensive headphones. My favorite headphone brands are Audio-Technica, Sennheiser and Grado. All of these manufacturers make great quality headphones within your price range as well as far above. These three will also give you a much better dollar to quality ratio than Bose.

Grado is probably the audiophile's favorite here followed closely by Sennheiser and then Audio-Technica. Grado is mostly known for their high end line ($350-$1,700), Audio-Technica for the lower end ($125-$200) and Sennheiser is well known throughout the price spectrum but, all three of these company's have quality choices within your price range.

A great place to help you narrow your choice is head-fi.org after you select the ones you like that are within your price range at a site like Newegg.

As far as a microphone goes, I would just use the one on your web-cam or pick up a cheap one. I'm sure that some may disagree but, I've always felt that as long as I could be clearly understood, that was all I required of a PC mic that was not meant for recording music.

Anyway good luck, I hope this helps! :sol:

Pretty good suggestion by Idonno.
I'd suggest you not to go for 'gaming' headsets as you can get better footstep noise with even an A4tech HS800 while the environment is silent. And here you're looking for one to enjoy music so you really better not go for them.
If a mic is really necessary, you can go for Zalman Zm-Mic1. That's a cheap, easy to use, good stuff and serves the purpose of course.

I read the Logitech website and sorry virtual sound and "discrete channels of audio data" are two different things. Discrete channels are split up into left front, right front, center and left and right rear for 5.1.

What they are doing is taking a stereo feed and simulating 5.1 or 7.1.

For example, for my surround headset(Turtle Beach Earforce HPA2) and my surround sound speaker system(Surround sound preamp processor, amps and speakers) they use separate analog inputs/outputs for each channel or HDMI(for the AV preamp.)

personally i'm using AudioTechnia ATH-M50 headphones w/ FiiO E07k/E9 (w/ AT condenser mic on my desk.. hooked up to my Scarlett 2i2) here.

I absolutely love the m50 headphones.... very comfy for me and great sound... somewhat smaller (foldable if you want to take them somewhere... wish they had a detachable cord however).

the are about $110 @ amazon right now

Yes, the AudioTechnia ATH-M50 are an excellent choice and are the headphones I wish I had bought instead of my Audio Technica ATH-A700's although they are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used.

If you buy the the AudioTechnia ATH-M50's you will have plenty of cash left for a mic. and far better sound than anything of similar price that Bose has to offer.
