I'm torn between the Lenovo Ideapad y500 and the Msi Gx60. They both seem very simmilar performance wise, but I am leaning soewhat towards the msi. I plan on using the computer for both college and gaming.

Here are some stats from the two:

Lenovo- intel core i7 3630qm, 16gb ram, dual 750m's in sli, 1tb hdd, 16gb cache ssd, 6-cell battery

Msi- amd a10 4600m, 8gb of ram (not sure if expandable), single 7970m, 750gb hdd, 9-cell battery

Both have a 1080p screen and are 15.6", however the msi is a bit heavier than the lenovo.

EDIT: depending on the seller, the lenovo is between $100 and $400 more than the Msi.

SLI 750 is quite powerful. One 750m because of boost is better than a 660m and almost as powerful as a 670m, in SLI they approach 7970m performance (though still a bit less and SLI issues). The gx 60 is horribly held back by its poor cpu. The y500 should cost $1000-1100 with an i7 + SLI 750m or slightly less than the gx60. I recommend the y500 mainly because the gx60 has such a poor cpu. hitman, BF3 MP, Gw2 will be unplayable or very poor on the gx60.

It's true that game optimization and drivers play a big role in performance. In terms of raw processing power, the A10 simply does not compete with an i5 or i7 though. The benchmarks posted here depict how egregious the difference is between a 4600M and a 3720QM when either is paired with a 7970M: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/694709-7970m-amd-cpu-vs-7970m-intel-cpu.html

The gap between an i5 may not be as big, but it's also there nonetheless. A10 APU is more or less a direct competitor to the i3, and from what I've seen, the A10 outperforms it.
