most efficient way to run applications

hi i was wondering how much of windows can you strip down to run just what you want for 1 application like a barebones mode with nothing but the applications and the things it needs would it be worth it and by how much

Lots of software have auto update these days, turn those off. W7 and 8 are pretty good at not running anything by default. I don't remember needing to disable any services but always run hardly anything extra. If I close chrome I'll be at 50 processes in w7 pro 64bit. Depending on the processes and what you are doing, it may not even affect performance since most of them just idle and take very little ram.
