Sound plays thru both my speakers and my headphones

I have gone thru the playback menu and there are no options to disable the laptop speakers that I can find. It lists the Speakers/Headphones as one device. I am not sure if this is an issue with the laptop, the IDT audio drivers, or windows 8( though I find I am not much of a fan of Win 8). Not to sound like too much of an idiot, but if anyone has step by step instructions on how to disable only the laptop speakers that would be much appreciated. in my experience plugging in headphones automatically does this.

ok you're right, it should change to headphones by default and disable speakers mentioned here page 10 chapter 2.

Have you tried setting the speakers/headphones to default source? it may enable the headphone priority function. Just wondering it may not be and is just set to being ready.
