Hi everyone,

I'm a bit noobish when it comes to hardware for computers, but what I've gathered is that my original hard drive on my Satellite crashed. I mean, it still boots and everything, but as soon as it reaches my desktop, Windows Explorer crashes. I try to restart the .exe via Task Manager, but when I attempt to start a new task, THAT crashes too. I've tried to run antivirus scans and a system restore using Safe Mode (Command Prompt), but both features have oddly disappeared/are unavailable.

Anyways, I have an old HP 'Compaq nx6325' laptop and it has a cracked screen, but everything else still works. It runs XP while the Toshiba runs Vista, though. I tried switching out the hard drives, but when I turned on the Toshiba, it gives me the logo screen, but does not go past that. I get stuck on a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen, even though when I go into the boot menu, the hard drive does appear to be installed.

(If you're wondering, I did take the HP hard drive back out and put it back into the HP laptop. It does indeed work.)

What I would like to know is what exactly I'm doing wrong. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

What I would like to know is what exactly I'm doing wrong.

The only thing you're doing wrong is expecting the HP drive to work in the Toshiba. The drivers and the WinXP install have no knowledge of the Toshiba.

Different motherboard/video/everything else drivers.

On the Toshiba, a Repair or reinstall of Windows would probably work.

Well that saved me a lot of time and confusion, thank you.

Edit: I no longer have a Vista install disc, but I have an old XP install disc. That should be fine to use, right? (I'm not too picky about my OS.)
