New battery won't initialize

New Dell laptop battery, but it won't charge or computer won't recognize it. The laptop only works on A/C adapter. How do you intialize the battery? I've heard you have to short it out initially prior to installing it. Thanks! Ray

I have had these issues before.

There is a process for it. You may have to google the exact details or try this..

With the no battery installed to the laptop. Hold the power button down for like 10-30 seconds. Then plug the laptop into the AC adapter and power on the laptop without the battery installed. (I may be missing a detail).. Then turn off the system. Install new battery and try again.
