I have a Dell Studio 1535 that was acting up so I reformated it with Windows 7 Ultimate. The installation went clean but when It tries to load windows it gets a bsod 0x7b. I know it's not the hd because I took it out and actually have it in the computer im using right now. I tried a different hd also in the laptop and it still does it. I ran Linux Puppy which works. I have tried removing the ram which isnt the problem. I have also ran the startup recovery whiich does nothing and also the memery tests. I have cleared the cmos. I have taken the battery out and held the power button.

The only thing I can think of is somehow the motherboard or the sata controller had been damaged during the installation or when I removed the hd. But what is werid is it was just working (but not very well) right before I reformatted it. Help me guys!! thanks for your time.

The only time I've ever received this error, on a working hdd anyway, is if the sata controller was set to AHCI mode in BIOS without AHCI drivers installed first. I would think that you didn't change that option in BIOS after installing Windows before booting into Windows the first time. But you could see if changing the sata option in BIOS to IDE or compatibility mode will let you boot into Windows. If it does then you can try to install the drivers again and see if you can change it back to AHCI mode. Or you can just try to reinstall Windows again.
