Hi everyone! I am going to build my own pc soon and I am thinking about getting Audioengine A5+ speakers. Will a 5.1 sound blaster ZX sound card change the quality of the speakers sound? How so? Is the soundcard worth it?

Another thought, are audiengine speakers worth the money? They look nice and sexy, but will the speakers perform well if I dont get the soundcard?

Thanks for reading!

I haven't heard the speakers but the reviews look good. The way I look at it, they are pretty much studio monitor speakers that will be great PC speakers. You would pay that price or a lot more for home stereo monitor speakers anyways. In terms of the sound card, yes, you will get better quality sound with the sound card. Mobo on board sound chips for the most part do a good job but not quite as good as a sound card.

What are you using the speakers for, music, gaming and music? Will you be doing 5.1 or just 2.0?

Another option, not as expensive but very good are AV 40s or these speakers:The nice thing about this setup beside being really inexpensive. You can always use the speakers if you decide to get a something fancier later on. For example, using them for rear surrounds. Link to parts express, $40.00 for the pair and if you look you will see a link for the Lepai amp:http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-652 and for a total of 150 bucks you can add a woofer if you want more bass. These aren't powered but the amp link will be on that page.

Happy listening, the Prisoner...

They aren't bad but for $400 i would say nope not value for money and as the earlier poster stated a T-amp and bookshelf speakers combo is much cheaper and even with the addition of a 8-10" active sub would cost less than the A5+
