Err99 could be anything, like memory card, battery, shutter, and lens.
Try this:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and memory card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery and not memory card*, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
*If the err99 is there, then the camera should be serviced.
Next insert the card,
If the err99 is there, use other memory card.
If the same err99 appears, clean the lens contacts or use other Canon lens.
If you see the ERR 99 again with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera should be serviced.
