New CPU fan won't spin

Hey, I just purchased a new CPU fan for my Lenovo Y560p laptop and it will not spin. I used SpeedFan and noticed that it was overheating and checked the fan to see if it was spinning and it wasn't. I plugged my old fan back in and it started spinning and cooling immediately. There seems to be no physical issues with the new fan and the blades spin freely and I also cleaned out any dust inside the laptop.

Any help or ideas would be great!

New fan for laptop? What the? This kinda thing you leave untouched, you simply change memory and HDD in notebooks. If you want better performance, get a more recent model.

I understand that but my issue is my old fan has issues as it spins very loudly and overheats and shuts down. I reapplied paste to the heatsink and that only dropped the temperature a little. The old fan would spin at full capacity at all times and would no longer run programs it used to. So i got a new fan and that new fan won't spin at all.

Make sure it's connected properly and if need be, check the voltage on the pin connector using a volt ohm meter. Unless you got a DOA fan, you may actually have a problem with the board somewhere, whether it be the ICHx/PCH chip, or some other thermal monitoring hardware.

hey thanks for the reply, the voltage stated on the fan is the same as the other fan. I don't think its the board because the other fan spins when connected.

Sure thing.

I actually meant the voltage the board supplies by testing the pins/fan connector, rather than the fan itself. If the old fan spins though, then that's probably not the problem and you may need to exchange the new fan.
