You own the second one already? Is its performance not meeting your needs? I'm not sure I completely understand the question. The first one is actually not really better at all. I wouldn't consider it an upgrade. Yeah it has more ram and a few more features, but it's also over 2 years old and uses older generation technology.

$500 is way too much to pay for it. $250-300 tops maybe if it's in perfect condition.

You could always upgrade the RAM in your unit to 8GB also.

The Envy 15 is still an excellent laptop. 1080p IPS screen. Quad Core for video editing. Real graphics card equivalent to a AMD 6670 or nVidia 640. You're not going to find that new for $500. Downside, over 2 years old, runs hot and may throttle, and complaints about red accuracy. Quick search on ebay suggests more than $400 and less than $550.

Absolutely not. The 4830 isn't even close to the mobile versions of those chips, much less the desktop cards.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-640M.71579.0.html

The i7 840qm doesn't bench any better than the i5 and uses a lot more power in the process.

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-840QM-vs-Intel-Core-i5-2410M

Anyone paying even $400 for that is getting ripped off. Spend $100 more and get an Ivy Bridge i5.

Please find a new i5-3xxx with 28nm discrete GPU and 1080P IPS for $500. Since we're posting benchmarks.

Who cares if it uses more power if it has a bigger battery? It is used. It is 2 years old. You probably want to plan on replacing the battery in a year. And while you can try to ripoff the seller, the fact is someone is willing to pay on ebay $450 for the slower i7-720QM version.

I'm not sure what your point is here.

The OP asked if buying the first system would be a reasonable upgrade. He already owns the second system. The first one wouldn't even come close to being worth spending even a couple hundred dollars more on.

The first benchmark you posted only shows my point that the two CPUs perform very closely to one another.

The second shows tiers of graphics cards and doesn't even list the 4830m. Assuming it performs one tier under the desktop version, it's still a full tier below the cards you mentioned, again proving my point.

Idiots will buy anything on eBay because they don't have any idea what they're talking about.

$500 for a 2 year old laptop with a GPU from 2009? LOL! Are you honestly suggesting this as a worthwhile upgrade?

You can get a brand new Y400 for $720 or an i5 system with a GT 730m for around $600.

Also, a quick note to everyone out there: Don't buy used computers or computer parts. There's usually a reason why people are selling them.

Laptop technology has changed dramatically over the past 3 years. High performing ones are no longer hot, heavy, and loud. Ivy Bridge and Kepler changed that.

Still ignoring the point. When faced with facts you ignore them. Your own benchmark which is full of 2007 games shows 4830M beating a 6550M in Crysis. Notebookcheck has it faster where it matters to OP. Multithreading. Still waiting for you to show me this fantasy 1080p IPS screen for $500. Stop posting 768p laptops with single channel RAM. Do you honestly think that is going to be any better than the Envy 15 a year from now? Stop making stuff up. I said it was worth anywhere between $400-550 based on a search of ebay. You can discount it. The sample size isn't large and it is ebay. But do you have a better source than your opinion? Do you also advocate not buying used houses and cars? Is the market for those things not real? I wouldn't personally buy a used laptop so I totally agree with you. But it's people like you and me that are causing the market to discount used laptop prices. I also wouldn't buy a Ferrari for $150,000. Doesn't mean the market will ever meet my price. As for OP. Only thing the OP has stated is video editing. More dual core i5's that are exactly like the OP's original system certainly aren't worth it.

The only one here who is ignoring the point is you. Answer the question. Are you advocating that it is worth an extra $500 for the OP to purchase a 2 year old machine or not? Do you honestly believe that it's worth even a couple hundred more than the one he has? The performance difference is slight at best. An IPS screen doesn't justify the price difference either.

I'm not sure what a 6550m has to do with anything. You said desktop GT 640 and 6670. It doesn't even match the mobile versions of those chips. I never said he could get an IPS screen or any of that nonsense for $500.

I said that he could get equal performance in a brand new machine. That $600 Acer would be equal to or better than the Envy 15 in any measurable benchmark, would come new with warranty, and finally would run cooler and use less energy. You yourself even said that the Envy 15 might throttle.

Yes it would be considerably better than the Envy a year from now and 10 years from now. The Ivy Bridge i5 is dead even with the older i7 and the GT 730m would mop the floor with the 4830 from 2009.

I'm really curious as to where you got 6550M though.

If you wouldn't personally buy a used laptop, why are you even arguing this point?

I've listed the reasons why I think the Envy 15 is nice. You're welcome to have your own values and discount mine but I'm not going to repeat myself.

Where do you get $500 from? Try reading what I've written. Are you really implying a 45TDP processor will run cooler than a 45TDP processor? Amazing. And if you think a 45W IB QM runs cool you've never used one. Or are you implying that no one should need a 45TDP mobile processor. That makes no sense either.

Every benchmark? Did you actually look at any? 840QM is clearly better in multithreading. Benchmarks on notebookcheck show it being 20-50% faster in multithreading. Conceptually there's no way a dual core can be faster than a quad core that is only 1 year older in multithreaded apps.

In your egalitarian world, you can reply to me but I can't reply to you. Correct?

I'll quote you.

But you know the answer anyway. As for whether I would recommend it who knows. OP never did reply and like you may not care about 1080p and IPS and multithreading. In that case certainly don't bother getting an Envy 15.

Lets take this really slow and simple.

Benchmarks and what I may or may not know aside,

1. Do you think it's worth it to him to make the upgrade, even at $400? That's the question I've been asking this whole time and the question the OP wanted answered.

My opinion is no because there's not $400 of better there or even $300.

2. Would you personally buy a used notebook? If not, then why are you suggesting it to someone else?

Whether or not the Envy is a good value at any given price is totally irrelevant.

Very slow and very simple.

1) OP hasn't clarified so there's nothing to say. You admit to possibly not knowing what the OP wants and yet have an absolute position. Maybe the IPS screen is needed to wow clients. Maybe 10% faster renderings means more vacation or more money. Who knows. Maybe it's as vain as looks expensive like a MBP. Maybe money is tight. BTW clearly there are cheaper used i7-QM's than a Envy 15 which probably went for at least $2500 new. Why is the OP interested in this one?

If you read what I wrote, I didn't even suggest anything. I simply listed factual differences between the only two laptops the OP was interested in along with a so far unrefuted statement that nothing new for $500 has 1080p IPS and better than integrated graphics compared to the Envy 15.

2) So if I personally wouldn't do something, I'm not qualified to suggest it to someone else? How do lawyers, doctors, financial planners, chefs, anyone really, help anybody?

If you want to have philosophical debates maybe you should create your own thread.

You win :pfff:As much as I've gotten a good chuckle out of this, it's just not worth it anymore.

1. You're right. It was silly of me to assume what he wanted. Who am I to say he wouldn't buy a used, 2 year old notebook to wow customers, or if a few seconds here and there mean the difference between having time for a nice meal out versus a trip through the drive up?

2. Yeah, I don't like tomatoes, but I hear they are really good for you. Eat as many as you can. I do feel morally obligated to tell you they are slimy though.

Creating that thread was a great idea. I love philosophical debate! Please join me here if you're interested:

How well does that 6550M perform again?
