Hi
I have a DELL Studio 1450 Laptop.I bought it 3 years back.Recently i started experiencing some serious problems.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on the laptop. Now i wish to change the OS to Windows 7 or any other OS's.
The Problem is when it try to install any other OS's. i.e, when i try to boot the machine from any other devices(CD,USB pen drive) , It starts booting from the device and after sometime the machine turns off abruptly. I tried different OS s(windows 7,Windows XP,Ubuntu 12.10) from various devices (CD-ROM,USB stick) , But nothing seems to work. every time it ends up shutting down after initializing the boot.
So I am really stuck on the old ubuntu 10.10, and have no idea what to do :(

PLEASE HELP !!!

thanks in Advance

Can't you update ubuntu to version 12 using update manager? Sounds like a problem with the windows iso or a problem with the bios. All I can say is check through the bios and see if you've selected anything that you shouldn't and try a different operating system, other than windows.

Thanks for your reply :)

Apparently i cannot update to 12.10 from the update manager , when try to ,it says "your version of ubuntu is too old to get security fixes and critical updates" .
I did try ubuntu 12.10 iso also . it did not work, same end result. :(

The laptop is 3 year old.
The thing is i had windows 7 installed in my laptop when i bought it.then after 1 year i went for dual boot and installed ubuntu 10.10 along with the windows 7.after a while windows seemed to crash ever time i boot up windows 7 (Blue Screen of Death ) and hence i had to remove the windows 7 . and it left only ubuntu 10.10.
So i dont think the incompatibility is the issue.

anyway thanks alot for helping me out here :)

Anyone with a icon below their name e.g a graphics card logo, is a tom's hardware guru. Just look through answered questions till you see some tom's hardware gurus, I don't know how to search for people, sorry.
