Ok guys I need your help with this one.
Issue: 2 out of 5 times this laptop is booted I get these 2 messages when it fails to boot, "Disk Read Error Occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to Reboot" or "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot device and press a key"

This is a friend's laptop that came to me with the 2nd error shown above. I told him I'd check it out. After several tries to boot I'd get the error about 4 out of 5 times, so I opened the laptop & connected the HDD on 2nd HDD slot but got the same error. After also trying the HDD externally on my own PC I concluded it was the HDD. Got him to buy new one and reimaged from a backup of the old one I managed to make the one time I got it to boot. I got some problems with new HDD 'cause I used Acronis TI & it didn't create the correct partitions for Win7Ult. Anyways, that new HDD seemed to get bad sectors after several tries to reimage so to go for the sure thing, given that imaging a new HDD larger than old one can give trouble, I installed new HDD with clean Win 7 Home Prem. Got some BSODs every now & then but figured it was missing drivers. After installing all drivers & applications from the Asus support site for this laptop & running some tests, the laptop runs stable & good but owner keeps getting the issues mentioned above.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me guys, I'm frustrated with this one. I could only think the driver for the disk controller is still the wrong one or that the MB has some issue.

Thanks.

It's probably that you coppied some bad files or corrupted files or corrupted master boot record.

If you copy the disc the wrong way, you will copy over any bad sectors as well, you may need to just format it (full not quick) and let the drive fix any bad spots copied over. This is usually done with the drive tools and involves writing zeroes to the drive. Instead of imaging it, you may need to copy the files he wants to keep and dump the rest after a manual install of windows.

Thx for quick replies Brett928S2 and royalcrown. If you read well the last 2 sentences of the middle paragraph of my post you'll see that as last solution I did just what you are suggesting. That's why I'm stumped now.

Thx again & hope you & others have any more suggestions :)
