I have been wondering this because I have been trying to see if it would be possible to make a laptop from completely nothing but parts. Which would include making the casing. Unless I can find it somewhere which I haven't been able to. Also is the motherboard soldered to the frame in most laptop or no?

Solution
Steps to build a laptop:

1. Obtain a working laptop. New or used.
2. Carefully dismantle it completely, including unmounting the screen
3. Make note of ALL the mount points, holes, heat shields, etc in the now bare chassis
4. Create an exact duplicate of the inside of the chassis. You could even do it out of wood.
5. Put all the guts back in.
6. Mount the screen on a hinge.
7. Cry when it doesn't work.

You've just gotten about as close as we can get to 'building' a laptop.

ABS plastic, Magnesium, and Aluminum. Carbonfibre? some circuit boards use a metal chassis as a common point. ground or a 0vdc. this connection would be by a screw, not soldered.

im not sure building a laptop chassis from scratch would be very cost/time effective. the chassis, MB, HDD, DVD placments, and access points are usually designed around each other.
