Hello Everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satellite U405D-S2874 here exibiting odd behavior that I can't seem to resolve myself.

Issue: 98%+ Upon powering on the laptop, the following happens
Power LED Lights up
Blank Screen
CPU fan spins (for ~1 second) then stops
Power LED stays lit
DVD drive is still powered (can be opened and closed)
No HDD operation indication LED (it's off)

The other <2% it will turn on and I let it sit at bios while tinkering. At the moment I had the hard drive in only once when it managed to turn on and after a little time loading windows it went blank and exhibited the same behavior (blank screen, Power LED on but nothing really doing anything).

When the laptop does turn on properly, a few extra LEDs such as the logo turn on so it's really quick to see nothing is happening. No HDD indication LED on, no logo LED, etc....

Attempted Diagnostics:
Remove one of the two sticks of ram (tried both, each seperately)
Remove battery and try to run just on AC adapter
Remove AC adapter and try to run just on battery
Remove HDD, Optical Drive
Reset CMOS (It did work on I think the 4th try after I did this)
Blow out/clean CPU exhaust (was clean to begin with)
Do the reset procedure (Uplug all power, hold power button for a few mins, let go for a few mins, try to turn back on with just AC plugged in)
Tried an external monitor

Any ideas? Since the laptop does turn on once in a long list of tries, I'm not sure what could be wrong. It's so random that I can't put my finger on any issue. Thanks for any help you guys are willing to offer.

Flaky results like this are indicative of a hardware failure. Something (GPU, MoBo, RAM, etc..) is failing. It will continue to give you hope until it fails completely, at which point you may be able to determine what the problem is.

More than likely it is the MotherBoard. Consider pricing replacements to see if it is worth fixing.
