I'll try and give all the info I can. I have a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5146.
About 2 months ago it started getting bad lag spikes, the resource monitor said it was svchost. now it freezes when several things are done; any scan of any kind (sfc/scannow gets to 58%, malwarebytes gets to around 300k files, Norton gets about halfway through, and CCleaner gets to about 28%) or leaving it idle for more than 15 minutes. CTRL+ALT+DEL will either do nothing or fail to display security options. When it freezes I can hear the hard drive wind up, click, then nothing, wind up, click then nothing, etc.
Any advice would be appreciated
Edit: It runs windows 7, and the scans fail even in safe mode.

Hi,

You can try to REPAIR Windows 7. Did quick search on google, start with this guide: http://captaindbg.com/repairinstall/

How much ram is installed and how much does BIOS or W7 display?

If this don't do it then maybe some driver issues or faulty disk?

Also do you know if the machine drop or some some software installed by you or W7/OEM application updates that might have udpated the machine and made it kaput?

Not entirely sure :/

I'll keep pondering,

Dan
